1500 miles away, a woman crouched on a metal beam in the rafters of a warehouse, watching the activity of several men below her. Her flowing blond hair, striking blue eyes, and high cheekbones were not the only reasons she was unforgettable. Her lithe body — athletic but still feminine, strong but delicate — was stunning. Her five foot five inch frame carried just enough muscle to give her some curves, adding to her supermodel looks.
The clothing on her body was almost equally striking. She wore a costume similar to what an Olympic figure skater might wear, but her attire was somehow both more simple and more radiant at the same time. She wore a tight minidress made of a smooth, shimmering material similar to Lycra, mostly blue but with a short white skirt. A short collar tapered open at the front of her neck, with a small decorative button on either side of the collar, and the diamond of a necklace peaking through the opening. The dress was sleeveless, showing off her thin, toned arms.
Below her waist, the white skirt barely reached her long legs, which were sheathed in translucent tights. The elbow-length gloves on her arms were as pure white as her skirt, and made of the same smooth material, while the white ankle boots on her feet could have passed for figure skating boots without blades.
Unlike Mantis, this woman was not anonymous. She lacked anonymity not just because of her beauty or attire, but because of who she was. The woman was the famous superheroine, Sapphire Angel. She was famous for a long list of accomplishments, including bringing down drug rings, human traffickers, and illegal weapons dealers. And just over a month earlier, she had prevented a nuclear disaster and saved the President of the United States, launching her to the pinnacle of worldwide stardom.
On this night, she looked down at nine men unloading a white van. These men were members of the Red Scorpions, a gang going through its death throes, thanks to her. The gang had wreaked havoc on the region for five years, spreading drugs and weapons throughout the area. Sapphire Angel had put the gang in her crosshairs, determined to end its reign. That had been five months earlier, and she had dismantled the gang, little by little.
The men below comprised some of the gang's remaining leaders, and what remained of its best muscle. Once she took this group out of play, she would only need to mop-up stragglers over the coming weeks.
She tingled with excitement, ready to move into action, but sadness crept in at the periphery of her senses as she thought of all the damage this gang had done over the last five years. Their weapons and drugs had spread throughout the city and region, harming countless people. And thanks to constant turf wars with other gangs, additional innocent people were caught in the middle. An ache throbbed in her heart as she considered all the broken homes. It was time to end this gang.
As the men gathered around a stack of crates, their backs to her, Sapphire Angel burst into motion, pushing off the beam. Her right hand gripped a rope she had fastened to the beam, and twenty feet into her drop it went taught with enough force to rip most arms out of the socket, but not hers. She held it for a spit second longer, before opening her hand and continuing her descent.
When her boots hit the ground, she flexed her legs and leapt at the men. They turned at the sound, just as she came out of a midair somersault. Her boots crashed into the man in the center, launching him backward into the crates. As her feet touched down, she spun and lashed out with a karate chop to the throat of the man to her right, while driving an elbow to the stomach of the man behind her. The first man grabbed at his throat, gargling and stumbling back into two other men, while the other man doubled over gasping, just in time for her to spin and drive a knee into his jaw. His knees buckled and he dropped to the hard floor, unconscious.
Sapphire Angel spun again, toward the first man, who wheezed as he disentangled himself from two men. The three men were easy pickings as she waded in with two punches and a whipping kick, driving them to the ground and out of the fight.
The stunning superheroine leapt backward, somersaulting through the air, away from the fray. She landed and surveyed the carnage she had wrought. In just a few seconds, five gang members were out of the fight, laying on the floor either unconscious or groaning in pain. The four remaining gang members stood ten feet away, looking to the heroine, and exchanging glances with one another.
"You boys should have thrown in the towel five months ago, when I first gave you the chance," Sapphire Angel said with a playful grin, as she put one hand on a cocked hip. "Are you finally ready to give up?"
Three of the four men started to raise their hands in surrender, before the fourth man, a thick man with a scorpion tattoo under one eye, scowled at them. She recognized him as Ronnie Burns, a former lieutenant in the gang who was now the most senior leader, with everyone of higher rank sitting in prison thanks to her. As he glared at the other men, they withered under his gaze and lowered their arms.
"I don't know how you found us, bitch," he snarled, "but your luck runs out tonight."
The blond woman smirked, her gaze moving over the man on the ground.
"It doesn't seem like luck had much to do with what happened to them," she said, giving a slight nod in the direction of Burns' fallen mates. She looked back at Burns, batting her eyelids and pouting her lips.
"Fuck you!" Burns screamed, rushing toward her as he pulled a knife from the back of his belt. When he got within three steps of her, Sapphire Angel whirled with blinding speed, raising her leg and sending the toe of her boot crunching into the side of his head. The lights went out in his eyes as he flopped to the ground.
The remaining three men looked on with wide eyes, before raising their hands above their heads.
"Okay, okay," one of them said. "Don't hurt us."
"Good boys," Sapphire Angel said in a teasing tone. "Now hold your hands behind your back."
