“Deconstruction” Character Preview — Mantis
In Power Play we had a Raven, and in Deconstruction we have a Mantis. But whereas Raven was the real first name of Raven Tristan, Mantis is the alias for a man about whom little else is known, including his real name. Mantis was the name first coined by United States intelligence services when referring to him, but he adopted the name himself, as a way to thumb his nose at the country he hates.
Just as mantis insects were sometimes considered to have supernatural powers by citizens of Ancient Greece, U.S. intelligence services marvel at Mantis’ abilities, and speak of him in reverential tones. And just like a mantis insect, Mantis is an ambush predator, whose speciality is stealth and anonymity. He is a freelancer, but with a code and strong opinions of his own.
The primary service he offers are “acquisitions,” which, in his opinion, require more skill than killing. While Mantis is a skilled fighter with a finally-honed body, strength and combat skills are just part of his skillset. Stealth, agility, and a good plan are equally, if not more, important. Indeed, the opening paragraphs of Deconstruction show Mantis on a freelance job to “acquire” a young man for a new employer. Mantis only has a general idea why his employer wants the young man, but doesn’t really care.
As the story progresses, the employer continues using Mantis’ services, appreciating his abilities when Sapphire Angel enters the picture.
